Governor Perdue Appoints Hugh Gillis to the Georgia Ports Authority

ATLANTA, GA - Governor Sonny Perdue announced today the appointment of Senator Hugh Gillis, District 20, to the Georgia Ports Authority. Senator Gillis' appointment will become official upon his resignation from the General Assembly in July of this year.
"Hugh Gillis is the longest active serving legislator in the nation, his experience is invaluable," said Governor Sonny Perdue. "His dedication to Georgians and public service will not end with his retirement, he will continue to serve the people of Georgia through his appointment to the Georgia Ports Authority."

Hugh Gillis, 85, Soperton, GA- Gillis has served in the General Assembly since 1941, currently representing District 20 in the Senate. He is Chairman of the Senate Natural Resources and the Environment Committee and a member of the Senate Economic Development, Senate Finance, Senate Reapportionment and Redistricting, and Senate Appropriations committees. Gillis is a farmer and timber grower and has received numerous awards for outstanding legislative service from organizations such as the Soil and Water Conservation Service, the Georgia Poultry Federation and the Veterinary College of Georgia. He serves on the board of the Georgia Farm Bureau and the Forestry Association. Gillis received his undergraduate degree from Georgia Military College. Gillis is married to the former Montez Champion. He has three children.
