Atlanta - Governor Sonny Perdue today joined United States Department of Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta to accept three grants for Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport totaling more than $45 million for security and noise mitigation enhancements.
"Hartsfield is one of the nation's busiest airports with daily flights taking thousands of passengers to destinations around the world," said Governor Sonny Perdue. "The grant awards presented by Secretary Mineta will help strengthen security to further protect our homeland and the passengers who pass through this international airport."
Most of the grant funds, $39.75 million, will be used for modifications to the Airport to accommodate the installation of the Explosive Detection System machines (EDS). Additional projects include $4.19 million for additional security enhancements and upgrades to two Airport fire stations and $1.9 million for aircraft noise abatement purposes.
I want to express my thanks to President Bush and Secretary Mineta for these critical funds," added Governor Perdue.
