Atlanta - Governor Sonny Perdue issued the following statement regarding the passing of former Atlanta Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr.:
"On behalf of all Georgians, Mary and I extend our deepest condolences to the Allen family and friends. We will keep them in our thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time.
"Ivan Allen, Jr. was a strong and thoughtful leader. Under his direction, all people were encouraged to join him in rising above turmoil to take Atlanta to new heights.
"Thanks to Mayor Allen, Georgians can enjoy watching the Braves or Falcons. He was instrumental in building Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, the former home of both teams.
"Mayor Allen's vision led to the creation of MARTA and the completion of the downtown expressway system. Air transportation was also expanded with the first international flights from Atlanta.
"Another accomplishment for him and the city was the growth of the arts. His support for the arts was well-known. While Mayor, both the Atlanta Civic Center and the Atlanta Arts Complex, now known as the Woodruff Arts Center, were built.
"The City of Atlanta and the State of Georgia mourn the passing of another prominent leader. Mayor Allen contributed greatly to our capital and he should be remembered for helping make Atlanta the vibrant city that it is today."
