Atlanta - Atlanta, GA - Governor Sonny Perdue issued the following statement this morning regarding the passing of former Governor Lester Maddox:

"Mary and I extend our sincere condolences to the Maddox family and friends. During this time of mourning, I encourage all Georgians to keep the Maddox family in their thoughts and prayers.

"During his term as Georgia's 75th Governor, Lester Maddox fought for reforms in the state's prison and healthcare systems. He also appointed prominent future state leaders to serve in his administration, including Governor Zell Miller and Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin.

"Governor Maddox had the unique ability to connect with everyday Georgians regardless of their background or station in life. He established 'People's Day' where each month his office would be open to meet with citizens from around the state. And his commitment to public service carried him into the Lieutenant Governor's Office following his four year term as Governor.

"I find fitting that Governor Maddox passed away so near the anniversary of his beloved wife Virginia's death six years ago. Anyone who knew Lester knew that Virginia was his heartbeat and one true love.

"Georgians have lost more than a former Governor. We have lost a devoted family man, a dedicated public servant, and a prominent citizen who loved this State and her people."
