Governor Sonny Perdue Declares State of Emergency In Harris and Troup Counties

Atlanta - Governor Sonny Perdue today issued an Executive Order declaring a State of Emergency in Harris and Troup Counties. Both areas were impacted by extensive flooding following severe weather earlier in the week.

"A tour of these counties confirmed the significant damage both areas have sustained. I am deeply saddened and concerned for the residents of these counties, their families, their homes and their businesses. I continue to send thoughts and prayers to these and other Georgians impacted by recent severe weather," said Governor Perdue.

Governor Perdue toured West Point, Georgia in Troup County late yesterday evening. He was accompanied by State Senator Dan Lee and met onsite with local officials and representatives from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) and the Georgia Department of Transportation.

During this time, Governor Perdue has also remained in regular contact with General Peter Madson, General Peter Madsen, Division Engineer for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers - South Atlantic Division.

"I have declared a state of emergency and authorized GEMA to activate Georgia's Emergency Operations Plan in Harris and Troup counties. My office will work closely with GEMA to ensure that we provide assistance to our fellow Georgians during their time of need."

GEMA is the lead state agency for coordination of emergency and disaster response activities. Georgia's Departments of Human Resources, Natural Resources and Transportation and the American Red Cross are also on site providing assistance to Harris and Troup county residents. The Georgia Department of Transportation has closed Interstate 85 in both directions at Mile Post Two.
