Governor Perdue Appoints Commissioner of Georgia Merit System

 

ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue announced today the appointment of Raymond E. “Steve” Stevenson, Jr., as commissioner of the Georgia Merit System (GMS).  GMS sets the human resource and personnel management policies for Georgia’s 101,000 state employees. 

 “I am proud to appoint Steve Stevenson as the new commissioner of the Georgia Merit System,” said Governor Sonny Perdue.  “With more than 24 years of human resources and labor relations experience in the private sector, he has the knowledge and capabilities to serve Georgia’s state employees.”   

Stevenson has served as executive director of several human resource organizations for the Bellsouth Corporation since January 2002.  He has more than 24 years of experience in human resources management and labor relations with companies in Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee.  Stevenson has extensive experience in interpreting and administering collective bargaining agreements and developing and maintaining non-traditional labor/management programs.  He is certified as a professional in human resources.

Stevenson, 48, earned a bachelor’s degree in commerce and business administration with specialization in human resources management and labor law from the University of Alabama.  

He resides in Atlanta and has two children.

Stevenson’s appointment is effective November 15, 2006.
