Governor Perdue Announces Executive Appointments

ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue announced today the following executive appointments.

Georgia Land Conservation Council

Chuck Leavell, 54, Dry Branch, GA, Member – Leavell and his wife, Rose Lane, are the owners of Charlane Plantation, an award-winning pine forest plantation and hunting preserve. Mr. and Mrs. Leavell were selected as the 1999 Outstanding Tree Farmers of the Year by the American Forest Foundation and the American Tree Farm System. Leavell is a spokesperson for the Georgia Forestry Association (GFA), and a well-known, respected author and speaker. His first book, “Forever Green: The History and Hope of the American Forest,” is in its second printing and has been translated and released in Germany and Austria. His latest book is a children’s book titled “The Tree Farmer” that recently won the “2006 Growing Kids Excellence in Children’s Literature Book Award” given by the American Horticultural Society. Leavell is an established pianist in the music industry and has worked with artists such as The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, The Black Crowes, George Harrison, The Allman Brothers Band and more, as well as having his own solo career. He is currently on tour with the Rolling Stones.

Board of Community Health

Bruce E. Cook, 61, Atlanta, GA, Member – Cook is founder and chief executive officer of Choosing the Best Publishing, LLC. He served as president and chief executive officer of Rapha, a national healthcare organization, chief executive officer of Leadership Dynamics International, national director of “Here's Life America” and chairman of the Georgia Board of Human Resources. Cook is a member of the Commission for a New Georgia and served as chairman of the CNG Taskforce on Community Care for Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities. He served as a member of management task forces for AT&T, United Airlines and Coca-Cola. Cook earned a bachelor’s degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a master’s degree from Harvard University. He and his wife, Donna, have two grown children.

Georgia Medical Center Authority

W. Thomas “Tommy” Green, Jr., 62, Carrollton, GA, Member – Green is CEO of Greenway Medical Technologies, Inc. He serves as chairman of the board at West Georgia National Bank, board member of the State University of West Georgia, board member of Tanner Medical Foundation and is an active participant at the Carroll Tomorrow organization. He served as president of Carrollton Rotary Club and Sunset Hills Country Club and was director of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce. Green earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia. He and his wife, Betty, have three grown children and five grandchildren.

Georgia Professional Standards Commission

Hester “Hessie” C. Vasconcelos, 56, Roswell, GA, Classroom Teacher Representative – Vasconcelos is a Spanish teacher at George Walton Comprehensive High School in Cobb County. She is a member of the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE), the American Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and the Foreign Language Association of Spanish & Portuguese (AATSP). Vasconcelos earned a bachelor’s degree from New York University, a master’s degree from Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, a specialist’s degree from the University of Sarasota and she is enrolled in the doctor of education program through Argosy University. She and her husband, Gileno, have two grown children and one grandchild.

D. Eugenia “Jeannie” Tucker, 46, Enigma, GA, Classroom Teacher Representative – Tucker is a teacher at Berrien Elementary in Berrien County. She is a member of the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE), the Georgia Reading Association, the Berrien County Farm Bureau and the Berrien County Young Farmers Organization. She served as the state women’s committee chair for the Georgia Farm Bureau. Tucker earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from Valdosta State University and a specialist’s degree from Georgia Southwestern State University. She and her husband, Ricky, have two grown children and three grandchildren.

Rose M. Powell, 42, Kathleen, GA, Classroom Teacher Representative – Powell is a teacher at Feagin Mill Middle School in Houston County. She serves as chairperson of the math department and treasurer of the band boosters. She received the 2005-2006 Best Buy Teach Award and was a 2005-2006 Houston County Teacher of the Year finalist. Powell earned a bachelor’s degree from Mercer University and a master’s degree from Georgia College & State University.

Georgia Board of Dentistry

Clark M. Carroll, D.D.S., 53, Eastman, GA, Dentist Member – Carroll has a general dentistry practice in Eastman and is on staff at Dodge County Hospital. He serves as president of the Georgia Board of Dentistry. He is a member of the steering committee of the Central Regional Dental Testing Service, the American Association of Dental Examiners, the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, the Pierre Fauchard Academy of Dentistry, the Georgia Academy of Dental Practice and the Academy of General Dentistry. He served as president of The Central District Dental Society and was awarded Honorable Fellow of the Georgia Dental Association. He is on the board of directors of the Dodge County High School Football Boosters and is a radio broadcaster of DCHS football. He served as chairman of Ocmulgee Regional Library Trustees, president of Eastman Lions Club and director of Eastman Dodge Chamber of Commerce. Carroll earned a bachelor’s degree from Middle Georgia College and a dental degree from the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry. He and his wife, Jolene, have two children.

Elaine S. Richardson, 57, Jonesboro, GA, Consumer Member – Richardson is the office manager at Candy Apple Custom Collision Center. She retired from the Secretary of State’s Office after working for 29 years with the Georgia Board of Dentistry. She is married to Eddie Richardson.
