Governor Announces $355,000 in Grants to Volunteer Health Clinics
ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue announced today the award of $355,000 in health care grants to seven volunteer clinics in Georgia. The grants will be distributed to community clinics that provide access to primary medical and dental care for the underinsured and uninsured citizens of Georgia. A list of the grant projects is included below.
The Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH) Office of Rural Health Services administers the grants in coordination with the Georgia Volunteer Health Care Program (GVHCP). In 2005, Governor Perdue announced new efforts to provide greater access to quality healthcare for uninsured Georgians, the Volunteer Medicine Act. The Act extends state liability protections to doctors and others health care professionals who provide free health care to needy Georgians.
“Through the Volunteers in Medicine initiative and the commitment of our community clinics around this state, we are making a difference in the lives of many hard-working citizens,” said Governor Sonny Perdue. “These clinics and the professionals who staff them are an essential part of providing access to quality health care for all Georgians.”
Grant funds will be used in a variety of ways including renovation of facilities to increase patient capacity, expansion of clinic operations to increase access to primary, dental and pharmaceutical services, and routine screenings, education and outreach programs.
“Community clinics in Georgia provide many underserved citizens with their only access to necessary primary and dental care services,” said Rhonda Medows, commissioner, Georgia Department of Community Health. “We appreciate their commitment to quality health care in Georgia and congratulate these clinics on this tremendous opportunity.”
The Georgia Volunteer Health Care Program is available to communities to assist the volunteer health care professionals with clinic management and projects, including health care provider recruitment, contracting for sovereign immunity protection, administrative quality assurance review and ensuring that providers have the proper licenses.
Additional information on the Georgia Volunteer Health Care Program is available on the DCH website, www.dch.georgia.gov or through Pauline Lindstrom, director of GVHCP at (404) 463-7638.
