Governor Appoints Charley English as Acting GEMA Director

ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue announced today the appointment of Charley English as acting director of the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA).  GEMA operates under the authority of the Emergency Management Act of 1981.  The agency assists local emergency services with response to natural disasters and other emergencies.

“Charley English has been a public servant for 28 years,” said Governor Sonny Perdue.  “His knowledge and experience will be critical as Georgia continues and enhances its emergency preparedness.”

English replaces Mike Sherberger who retired from state government in February 2006.  A brief biography of Charley English is provided below.

Charley English, 47, Fayetteville , GA – Charlie English is currently the assistant director of the Georgia Office of Homeland Security/Georgia Emergency Management Agency.  Prior to January 2005, English served as GEMA director of operations for seven years.  He received the Leadership Award of the State Charitable Contributions Program, served with the National Governor's Association Center for Best Practices as a state team member in 2005 and was chairman of the Boy Scouts Law Enforcement Explorer, Atlanta Area Council.  English earned his bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Georgia State University and his master's degree in homeland security and defense from the Naval Postgraduate School .  English is a member of First Baptist Church in Fayetteville , Georgia .  English and his wife, Ronda, have one son and two daughters.
