Governor and First Lady to Host After-Prom Party

Governor’s Mansion to Provide a Safe Late Night Party for High School Students

ATLANTA – Governor and Mrs. Perdue will host Brookwood High School students at the Governor’s Mansion Sunday, May 14, 2006, from midnight to 6 a.m. for an after-prom party. The purpose of the event is to promote safe driving and responsible behavior for teenagers.

“Mary and I encourage parents and community leaders to use prom weekend as an opportunity to stress the importance of safe driving and responsible behavior amongst our teenagers,” said Governor Sonny Perdue. “It is important that we provide high school students with a safe and fun environment for festivities after prom.”

Brookwood High School was selected based on its pre-existing programs that promote safe driving and responsible behavior.

One of Brookwood’s most notable events is called “Project Graduation.” Each year the event follows official graduation activities from 11:00 p.m. until the following morning to keep students from engaging in unsafe behavior. The event includes games and activities at the YMCA in Lawrenceville. The week leading up to Spring Break, the Brookwood Rallies Against Trouble (B.R.A.T.) program highlights safety and responsible behavior during Spring Break. Last year Brookwood conducted a highway safety forum for students, parents and faculty. In 2005 the school participated in the “Click It or Ticket” mobilization campaign sponsored by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) to encourage students to buckle up.

GOHS and the Georgia Sheriffs' Association are partnering with the Governor and First Lady to organize the after-prom event.
