Governor Perdue Announces Executive Appointments

ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue today announced the following appointments to the Georgia Physicians Partnership. The Partnership will offer the perspective of health care providers to the Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH) on the development and implementation of state health care programs, such as Georgia Medicaid, PeachCare for Kids, the State Health Benefit Plan and the Certificate of Need Program.

Governor Perdue first announced the Georgia Physician Partnership during his remarks to the Medical Association of Georgia House of Delegates meeting on September 29, 2006.

Jacinto del Mazo, M.D, 65, Atlanta, GA – del Mazo is a physician and president of del Mazo Medical Services. He received a bachelor’s degree from San Anton, Madrid, Spain, and a medical degree from Faculdad de Medicina, Madrid, Spain. He and his wife, Arlene, have four grown children and four grandchildren.

S. William Clark III, M.D., 53, Waycross, GA – Clark is an ophthalmologist practicing at the Clark Eye Clinic and Satilla Regional Medical Center. He is a clinical assistant professor at the Emory Eye Center/Atlanta V.A. Hospital and the Medical College of Georgia. He is president of the Medical Association of Georgia, member of the MAG board of directors, MAG delegate to the Okefenokee Medical Society, director of the Eighth District Medical Society and vice chair of the Georgia AMA delegation. He is a member of the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology. Clark serves on the board of directors of Waycross Bank & Trust, the Okefenokee Swamp Park Association and the Okefenokee Heritage Center. He is the recipient of the 2000 American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award and has been listed six times in Best Doctors in the South. Clark earned a bachelor’s degree from Davidson College and a medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. He and his wife, Jill, have three children.

Thomas C. Hopkins, Jr., M.D., 52, Griffin, GA – Hopkins is an orthopaedic surgeon engaged in private practice at the Orthopaedic & Sports Injury Center in Griffin and chief of staff-elect at Spalding Regional Hospital. He is a member of the Georgia Orthopaedic Society, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Medical Association of Georgia. He is the immediate past president of the Georgia Orthopaedic Society. Hopkins earned a bachelor’s degree from Valdosta State University and a medical degree from Emory University.

Peter L. Meehan, M.D., 62, Sandy Springs, GA – Meehan is an orthopaedic surgeon practicing at Pediatric Orthopaedic Associates in Roswell. He is a clinical associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at Emory University School of Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Association, the Scoliosis Research Society, the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, the Medical Association of Georgia and the Georgia Orthopaedic Society. Meehan earned a bachelor’s degree from College of the Holy Cross and a medical degree from the University of Maryland. He and his wife, Barbara, have three grown children and four grandchildren.

Lynn B. Mullis, D.D.S., 48, Cochran, GA – Mullis is a primary care dentist practicing at M&C Dental Center in Cochran. He is past president of the Bleckley Chamber of Commerce, the Cochran Rotary Club, the American Cancer Society of Bleckley County and the American Heart Association of Bleckley County. Mullis is a member of the Georgia Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry and the American Dental Association. He earned an associate’s degree from Oxford College and a bachelor’s degree and dental degree from Emory University. Mullis and his wife, Cindy, have two grown children.

John T. “Ted” Perry, M.D., 51, White, GA – Perry is the president and senior associate at Cartersville Surgical Associates. He is a director of Century Bank and the chairman of the governmental committee for the Bartow Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of the Medical Association of Georgia, the Georgia Surgical Society, the Atlanta Vascular Society and the Composite State Board of Medical Examiners. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Furman University and his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. Perry and his wife, Carlene, have three children.

David L. Roberts, M.D., 46, Atlanta, GA – Roberts is a primary care internist at the Emory Clinic and the Charles F. Evans Professor of Medicine in the Emory University School of Medicine. He is the medical director of executive health, a member of the American Medical Association, a fellow of the American College of Physicians and serves on the Department of University Relations faculty advisory council. He has been listed twice in Best Doctors in America. He is the recipient of the Paul W. Seavey Senior Clinician Educator Award. Roberts earned a bachelor’s degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a medical degree from Emory University. He and his wife, Joni, have two children.

Larry D. “Dan” Stewart, Jr., M.D., F.A.A.P., 52, Perry, GA – Stewart is a pediatrician practicing at Cornerstone Medical Associates. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Georgia chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He serves as president of the Georgia chapter of Dixie Softball League. Stewart earned a bachelor’s degree and a medical degree from West Georgia College. He and his wife, Debra, have four grown children and three grandchildren.

Louis W. Sullivan, M.D., 72, Atlanta, GA – Sullivan is president emeritus of Morehouse School of Medicine. He served as secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under President George H.W. Bush. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society and is the recipient of fifty-one honorary degrees. He serves on the board of the directors for the Boy Scouts of America and Morehouse School of Medicine. He is the founding president of the Association of Minority Health Professions Schools. Sullivan earned a bachelor’s degree from Morehouse College and a medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine. He and his wife, Ginger, have three grown children.

Jules Toraya, M.D., 55, Savannah, GA – Toraya is an OB/GYN engaged in private practice. He is chief of staff at St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital. He is vice president and president-elect of the Georgia Medical Society. He is a fellow of the American Board of OB-GYN. Toraya earned a bachelor’s degree from Fairfield University and a medical degree from Georgetown University. He and his wife, Sharon, have three children.
