Governor and First Lady Host After-Prom Party

Governor’s Mansion Provides Safe Party for High School Students

ATLANTA – Governor and Mrs. Perdue hosted Brookwood High School students at the Governor’s Mansion this morning from 1:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. for an after-prom party. The event, attended by approximately 230 students, promoted safe driving and responsible behavior for teenagers on prom night and every night of the year.

“Mary and I enjoyed providing these students with a fun and safe environment for their after prom party,” said Governor Sonny Perdue. “It is very important that we stress to our young people to make good decisions and be responsible.”

Students arrived at the Governor’s Mansion from their prom held at the Georgia Freight Depot at 1:00 a.m. and were greeted by Governor Perdue and Mrs. Perdue. Under a large tent on the Mansion’s West Terrace, students danced to music provided by the Q100 Party Crew. Food, provided by Waffle House, and drinks, Coca-Cola products provided by the Georgia Beverage Association, were served in the Mansion’s Ballroom.

Activities throughout the early morning included karaoke, card games, basketball, inflatable jousting and bungee run, arcade games and a driving simulator. Students who tried the driving simulator were entered to win a scholarship for the Audi Teen Driving Experience.

Raffle drawings were held at the end of the party. Prizes included a $100 gift certificate to Publix, a hockey stick signed by The Atlanta Thrashers, an autographed guitar from the recording artist Pink, a basketball signed by The Atlanta Hawks, four tickets to an Atlanta Braves game, hair and nail gift certificates and passes to Stone Mountain Park.

Brookwood High School, located in Snellville, Georgia, was selected based on its pre-existing programs that promote safe driving and responsible behavior.

One of Brookwood’s most notable events is called “Project Graduation.” Each year the event follows official graduation activities from 11:00 p.m. until the following morning to keep students from engaging in unsafe behavior. The event includes games and activities at the YMCA in Lawrenceville. The week leading up to Spring Break, the Brookwood Rallies Against Trouble (B.R.A.T.) program highlights safety and responsible behavior during Spring Break. Last year Brookwood conducted a highway safety forum for students, parents and faculty. In 2005 the school participated in the “Click It or Ticket” mobilization campaign sponsored by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) to encourage students to buckle up.

GOHS and the Georgia Sheriff’s Association are partnered with the Governor and First Lady to organize the after-prom event. The event’s sponsors, donors and supporters included:
