Governor Perdue Announces Homeland Security Grants

 $40 million to be distributed to Georgia communities
 

             ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue announced today the award of $40 million in federal homeland security grants to Georgia for allocation to eligible communities around the state. This is part of the final Fiscal Year (FY) 2007 Homeland Security Grant Program (HSGP) announced this afternoon by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
             “With the assistance of our federal partners, we continue to do everything we can to keep our state and nation safe,” said Governor Sonny Perdue. “These awards will allow us to better protect our citizens and fight the war on terror. Over the next 60 days we will be notifying individual award recipients.”

             HSGP grants enhance the ability of states, territories and urban areas to prevent, protect against, respond to and recover from terrorist attacks and other disasters. Including this funding, by the end of FY 2007, DHS will have invested $23 billion in local planning, organization, equipment, training and exercises for state and local governments since September 11, 2001.

            The awards for fiscal year 2007 will be earmarked for five separate grant programs: Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI), State Homeland Security Grant Program (SHSGP), Law Enforcement Terrorism Prevention Program (LETPP), Metropolitan Medical Response System (MMRS), and Citizens Corps Program (CCP).

The grants, part of a $1.7 billion national Homeland Security Grant Program (HSGP), are designed to enhance the ability of states, urban areas and territories to prepare for and respond to terrorist attacks and other disasters. They can be used for planning, organization, equipment, training, exercises, management and administration.
