Winner’s state flag will be displayed at State Capitol for a day

ATLANTA Governor Sonny Perdue of Georgia and Governor Rick Perry of Texas today announced a friendly wager on the outcome of tomorrow’s Little League World Series U.S. Championship game. The home state of the winning team will have its flag displayed at the State Capitol for a day in the losing team’s capital city.

Almost 50 years ago, Governor Perdue suited up as the catcher for the Warner Robins American Little League squad. Tomorrow, that same team is poised to capture the U.S. Championship if it can defeat a very talented team from Lubbock, Texas.

“The Texas team has played great so far, but I’m confident our boys from Warner Robins American will play hard and represent Georgia well,” Governor Perdue said. “Mary and I are rooting for our hometown team to bring home a second consecutive championship to Georgia.”

“When Texans go for something, they make it their business to go big or go home,” said Gov. Rick Perry. “The great State of Texas is rooting for our Lubbock Western Little League boys as they battle Georgia for a spot in the World Series championship game. And we look forward to seeing the Lone Star flag shine bright at the Georgia Capitol.”

If history is any indication, the Warner Robins American team has a great chance. The first two Georgia teams to reach the World Series, East Marietta in 1983 and Columbus Northern in 2006, both won the Little League World Series title.

Warner Robins American is 3-1 in Williamsport, including a 16-6 win on Thursday over Chandler, Arizona in the U.S. Semifinals. The Lubbock Western Little League team is undefeated in the World Series so far, outscoring opponents 19-3 in three games.
