Bill strikes balance between protection, revitalization of Jekyll Island
ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue today signed into law House Bill 214 which enacts strong measures to protect the south end of Jekyll Island and reinforces the intent of the State of Georgia that no more than 35 percent of the island can be developed. The bill also extends by 40 years (from 2049 to 2089) the statutory authorization for the Jekyll Island Authority.
"Jekyll Island is a fantastic resource with so much unrealized potential for being one of the most popular destination vacation spots on the Atlantic coast," said Governor Perdue. "I have today taken what is a giant step toward ensuring that the very qualities we admire most about Jekyll Island are protected while we set the stage for some much needed revitalization to occur."
