Parents, Employers and Others can Access Information on Sex Offenders Online
ATLANTA – Today Governor Sonny Perdue announced the state of Georgia is one of 34 states participating in the U.S. Department of Justice's National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR). The sex offender registry web site, which became operational in July 2005, can be found at www.nsopr.gov . Georgia 's connectivity to the site went online today.
“This registry is a powerful tool that will help to protect Georgia citizens,” said Governor Sonny Perdue. “Public access to valuable information on sex offenders will help to prevent senseless crimes against innocent victims. I am proud that Georgia is participating in this effort.”
The NSOPR site links information from existing state registries, enabling citizens to access sex offender information with a single Internet search. NSOPR enables citizens to select one or more of the 34 states now linked and query by name, city, county or zip code. The site will provide offenders' name, physical description, address, criminal history and in most cases, a photograph.
This site will enable parents, employers and organizations who work with vulnerable populations to determine if an individual is a registered sex offender, not only in Georgia , but in any other state linked to the NSOPR.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is the central repository for the addresses and photographs of Georgia sex offenders. The registry holds information on sex offenders living in Georgia who have been released from prison, placed on probation, parole or supervised release since July 1, 1996. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, there are more than 500,000 sex offenders nationwide.
