Flags on State Buildings and Grounds Remain Lowered at Half Staff as a Mark of Respect for the Victims of Hurricane Katrina

ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue today ordered flags on all state buildings and grounds to remain lowered at half staff as a mark of respect for the victims of Hurricane Katrina until sunset, Tuesday, September 20, 2005, concurrent with the declaration of President Bush.
Text of the Executive Order is provided below:
FLAGS ON STATE BUILDINGS ORDERED LOWERED TO HALF STAFF
WHEREAS: On Monday, August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall along the Gulf Coast of the United States, bringing unparalleled destruction to this rich and vibrant region of our Nation; and
WHEREAS: Our neighbors in the States of Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi have witnessed and suffered unimaginable devastation, particularly in the tragic deaths of so many of our fellow citizens; and
WHEREAS: The President of the United States of America has authorized and requested that the flag of the United States of America be flown at half staff as a mark of respect for the victims of Hurricane Katrina until sunset, Tuesday, September 20, 2005;
NOW, THEREFORE, PURSUANT TO THE AUTHORITY VESTED IN ME AS GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA , IT IS HEREBY
ORDERED: That the flag of the United States and the flag of this State be lowered to half staff on all buildings and grounds for a time to run concurrent with the declaration of the President of the United States .
