Investment of $27 Million Creates 70 New Jobs in McDuffie County

ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue announced today that Shaw Industries, a Dalton, Georgia based flooring manufacturer, will expand its Thomson facility to meet increased market demand. The expansion will create 70 new jobs in the community and represents a $27 million economic investment.

“Shaw Industries is one of our state’s great corporate citizens and has played a major role in making northwest Georgia the leader in the carpet industry,” said Governor Sonny Perdue. “Shaw is committed to Georgia’s long-term economic growth, and I’m pleased to announce that they are creating more jobs for Georgians through the expansion of their Thomson facility.”

The facility in Thomson will allow Shaw to expand its nylon extrusion capability for carpet manufacturing. The company’s investment includes significant building improvements and capital expenditures for equipment needed to supply the additional capacity. The expansion is slated to begin in April 2005.

According to the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD), the company chose McDuffie County for the expansion project over other locations due to its proximity to Shaw’s existing facilities, links to transportation infrastructure and the area’s pool of skilled workers.

“Georgia’s strong resources, infrastructure and workforce are key factors in our economic growth,” said GDEcD Commissioner Craig Lesser. “Shaw understands that Georgia is the best place to do business and this expansion sends that message to the marketplace.”

Shaw Industries, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, is the largest manufacturer of carpet in the world today, with annual sales of more than $4.5 billion. Shaw also markets other floor coverings, including hardwood and vinyl. The company employs more than 30,000 Georgians.
