Statement of Governor Sonny Perdue Regarding the State Senate's Vote on Faith and Family Services Amendment

ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue issued the following statement today following the State Senate's vote on the Faith and Family Services Amendment:

“An unfortunate legacy of this session of the General Assembly will be a few members voting in opposition to faith-based organizations that provide aid to needy Georgians.  Thanks to those who opposed this measure, these faith-based groups will remain subject to the threat of legal action that could halt their valuable programs.

“The Faith and Family Services Amendment would correct the historic bigotry in the Georgia Constitution and bring it in line with the U.S. Constitution.  Today's vote against organizations rooted in faith that feed and clothe the hungry and care for foster children is a sorrowful moment in the history of our legislature.  I will not relent in my efforts to see that the people of Georgia have the opportunity to vote on this worthy amendment.”
