Super Bowl XXXIX to Use Turf Grown and Harvested in Georgia

RIDDLEVILLE, GA – Governor Sonny Perdue today joined officials with Jennings Turf and Pennington Seed in Riddleville, Georgia (Washington County) to assist in harvesting the turf that will be used in Super Bowl XXXIX. This year’s Super Bowl will be held in Jacksonville, Florida on Sunday, February 6, 2005. Governor Perdue has proclaimed today, January 6, 2005 as Turf Grass Day throughout the state.

“From my own days as a high school quarterback, I remember the anticipation of preparing for the big game. Every season there is at least one game with your number one rival that means more than all the rest. And you prepare for that game all year. I know the team at Pennington Seed and the folks at Jennings Turf have put that kind of care and attention into preparing this turf for the big game. So I’m honored to help harvest this turf destined for Super Bowl XXXIX and thank the team that produced it,” said Governor Sonny Perdue.

Jennings Turf Farm was tapped to grow the Super Bowl field because of its superior growing facilities and its ideal location just 200 miles north of Jacksonville. It is the first time that the Super Bowl turf has been grown in Georgia. One hundred thousand square feet of Pennington Princess 77 bermudagrass sod is being harvested. It will be rolled and transported to Jacksonville on more than 40 trucks. The turf will then be installed and prepared for the Super Bowl.
