Governor Perdue Announces Winner of Prom Party PSA Contest

ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue announced today that South Cobb High School in Austell is the winner of the Prom Party Public Service Announcement (PSA) Contest.  The school's reward is a prom party at the Governor's Mansion on Friday, May 11, 2007.  

Governor Perdue and First Lady Mary Perdue are opening the doors of the Governor's Mansion for the second straight year to host a prom party in an effort to promote safe driving and responsible behavior for teenagers on prom night and every night of the year.  This year Governor Perdue initiated a PSA contest for all high schools competing to win the prom party at the Governor's Mansion. 

"Mary and I are excited to provide these young adults with an experience that is fun, safe and enjoyable," said Governor Sonny Perdue.  "Choosing this year's winner was difficult.  We had so many wonderful entries, and I want to thank each of the schools for submitting their videos."

A total of 70 schools from across the state submitted PSAs for the competition.  The number was narrowed to 16 finalists from which the winning school was chosen.  The 16 finalists included:

John S. Davidson Fine Arts School, Augusta

Decatur High School, Decatur

Gainesville High School, Gainesville

Grayson High School, Grayson

Marietta High School, Marietta

Northgate High School, Newnan

Northview High School, Duluth

Osborne High School, Marietta

Parkview High School, Lilburn

Peachtree Ridge High School, Suwanee

South Cobb High School, Austell

Thomas County Central High, Thomasville

Walton High School, Marietta

The PSA videos of the 16 finalists were reviewed by a panel of judges from the Governor's Office, the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, Georgia Sheriffs' Association, Georgia Public Broadcasting, Students Against Destructive Decisions and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  

Each participating school was asked to submit a 30-second public service announcement addressing the dangers and consequences of impaired driving among teenagers.  Videos were judged on content, creativity and overall effectiveness of the message.  Georgia Public Broadcasting has agreed to work with the winning school to reproduce the winning PSA for broadcast on television.

This is the second consecutive year that Governor Perdue and First Lady Mary Perdue have hosted a prom party at the Governor's Mansion.  The Governor's prom party endorses safe and responsible decision making surrounding prom activities in Georgia.
