ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue issued the following statement today after the state received preclearance from the U.S. Department of Justice for the state’s voter verification process, including verification of U.S. citizenship.  On June 22, 2010 Georgia sued the DOJ to obtain preclearance.  After the DOJ consented to the process, Georgia filed for and received preclearance for the state’s voter verification process.

Georgia has worked diligently to uphold the sanctity of the ballot box.  To ensure honest and fair elections, we must provide access to all eligible voters and make certain that all who cast a vote are eligible. Today’s announcement is a victory for Georgia voters and validates our decision to file for judicial preclearance.”
