ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue today announced that Tommy Hills, the state’s first-ever Chief Financial Officer, has been approved by the State Depository Board as Treasurer of the State of Georgia. The move becomes effective on Sept. 1, when Dan Ebersole retires from state government after serving the last 13 years as Treasurer.

“We have navigated two recessions in the past eight years, and Tommy and Dan have both been a steady hand on the wheel during these turbulent times,” Governor Perdue said. “In this new role, Tommy will continue his efforts to ensure Georgia’s balance sheet is strong and we are employing sound fiscal management polices.”

Since 2003, Hills has served as CFO. He oversaw the operations of 24 state agencies, authorities and commissions whose primary functions are financial in nature. In his new role, Hills will still oversee the functions of the State Accounting Office, Georgia State Financing and Investment Commission and the Department of Banks and Finance. He will also continue to serve as convener of the state’s Finance Council.

Ebersole has served as Treasurer and Director of the Georgia Office of Treasury and Fiscal Services (OTFS), which is responsible for the receipt, investment, accounting and disbursement of state general, trust and custodial funds and certain federal funds. OTFS manages Georgia Fund 1 and the Georgia Extended Asset Pool, the $8 billion AAA-rated local government investment pools that offer a safe, liquid investment alternative for local governments and state agencies. OTFS negotiates fees and interest contracts for banking services provided to all state agencies. OTFS also administers the Georgia Higher Education Savings Plan, Georgia’s “529” college savings plan, with $400 million in assets.

Ebersole has had a distinguished career in public service, serving as the Commissioner of the Georgia Merit System, Senior Executive Assistant to Governor Zell Miller, Deputy Director of the Office of Planning and Budget and Director of the Georgia Senate Research Office.
