Governor Perdue Announces Executive Appointments

ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue announced today the following executive appointments.  Brief biographies are provided below:

Advisory Council for Public Health

Monica M. Farley, M.D., 53, Decatur – Farley is a professor and associate director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Emory University School of Medicine. She is also a staff physician at the VA Medical Center and director of the Georgia Emerging Infections Program. She is a councilor for the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation, a fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and a member of the editorial board of the American Journal of the Medical Sciences.   Farley earned a bachelor’s degree and a medical degree for the University of Missouri. She and her husband, Doug, have two children.

W. Harry Hannon, Ph.D., 68, Buford – Hannon is a management/consultant/contractor and provides management consultations and program support for the daily operation of the Newborn Screening and Molecular Biology Branch, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He retired from the CDC in January after 40 years of service. Hannon is vice president of the International Society for Neonatal Screening, an advisor for the Immunology and Ligand Assays Committee and a member of the Work Group for Clinical Laboratory Improvement Advisory Committee (CLIAC). Hannon earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgia State University and a doctoral degree from the University of Tennessee. He and his wife, Barbara, have two children and five grandchildren.

Robert S. Harshman, M.D., 54, Atlanta – Harshman is the medical director for Georgia Power Company/Southern Company. His medical specialty is Occupational Medicine and he is a certified Medical Review Officer. He is an advisory board member for the Emory Preparedness and Emergency Response Research Center. Harshman is a member of the American Medical Association, the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the Medical Associations of Georgia and Atlanta, and the Southern Medical Association. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Davidson College, and a medical degree from Autonomous University of Guadalajara School of Medicine.

Allison J. Koenig, M.D., 37, Atlanta – Koenig is a physician practicing at Piedmont Pediatrics in Atlanta. She is a member of the Harvard Club of Georgia and Girls on the Run of Atlanta. Koenig earned a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and a medical degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Henry M. Patton, M.D, FACP, 57, Covington – Patton is president of Newton Medical Associates. He is an attending physician at Newton Medical Center, clinical associate professor of medicine for the Medical College of Georgia and an instructor of advanced cardiac life support for the American Heart Association. He is a member of the East-Metro Medical Society, the Medical Association of Georgia and a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He has served as chairman of the Newton County Board of Health since 1986 and served on the Georgia Board of Human Resources from 2005 until July 2009. Patton is secretary for Georgia Chapter American College of Physicians where he serves on the Governor’s advisory council. Patton earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia and a master’s degree and medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. He, and his wife, Victoria have four children and four grandchildren.

Jean Sumner, M.D., 56, Wrightsville – Sumner is a physician practicing in Wrightsville, Georgia. She specializes in internal medicine with interests in geriatrics and rural health. She has served as a member of the State Medical Education Board, Rural Health Association Board and Department of Human Resources Board. She is immediate past president and current member of the Georgia Composite Medical Board. Sumner earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from the Medical College of Georgia and a medical degree from Mercer University. She and her husband, Joe, have two children.

Board of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities

Terry E. Langley, 47, Carrollton – Langley is the sheriff of Carroll County. He is an advisory board member of the Carroll County Emergency Shelter and a board member of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce and the Hope Center homeless shelter. Langley is a member of the Carrollton Kiwanis Club and the Bowdon Sertoma Club. He is a graduate of the Georgia Police Academy and the National Sheriff Institute. He and his wife, Cynthia, have two children.

Board of Corrections

Justin H. Wiedeman, 41, Atlanta, Fifth Congressional District Representative – Wiedeman is a partner, project manager, management committee member and financial manager with Wiedeman and Singleton, Inc., a civil and environmental engineering consulting firm. He is a member of the Atlanta Rotary Club, Atlanta Athletic Club, Campaign for Atlanta, Inc Board of Advisors and a founding board member of the Chastain Park Conservancy. He is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Georgia Association of Water Professionals and the Georgia Rural Water Association. Wiedeman earned a bachelor’s degree form Colorado State University and a master’s degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is married to Melissa Wiedeman.

Board of Human Services

Randall P. “Randy” Smith, 54, Marietta – Smith is a senior management consultant in operations for Chick-fil-A, Inc. He serves as a deacon and chairman of the Global Missions Team at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church. He leads a team from Winshape International (Chick-fil-A) and as a volunteer trainer with Providence Learning Center and Development Corporation’s “Changed Lives” Job Training Program. He is a board member and chairman emeritus of Global Resource Services. Hannon earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgia College. He and his wife, Wendy, have three children.

Sandra R. Smith, 43, Albany – Smith previously served as program designer and parent coordinator of the Go Community Service Program at Fellowship Christian School in Roswell. She is a member of the Junior League of Albany and the Southwest Georgia Home School Association. She served on the First Lady’s Our Children Campaign and the Young Life of Albany community board. Smith received the Ellen Rawlerson Spirit of Commitment Award in 2001. Smith earned an associates degree from Oxford College of Emory University and a bachelor’s degree from Emory College of Emory University. She and her husband, Gary, have three children.

Alva Joseph “Joe” Hopkins, III, 57, Folkston – Hopkins is the director of Hopkins-Gowen Oil Company, Inc., Southeastern Bank, president of Toledo Manufacturing Company, and a partner of Gowen Timber Company, Inc. He serves on the Suwanee-Satilla Regional Water Council and as a member and director of Forest Landowners Association. Hopkins is a founder and member of the executive committee of the Greater Okefenokee Association of Landowners and founder and former chairman of the St. Mary’s River Management Committee. He is a former member of the Georgia Board of Community Affairs, Georgia Land Conservation Partnership Council and Future of Forestry Joint Study Committee. Hopkins earned an associate’s degree from Oxford College, a bachelor’s degree from Emory University, and a law degree from Mercer University. He and his wife, Julie, have two children.

State Medical Education Board

Glenda H. Davis, M.D., 58, Hawkinsville (REAPPOINTMENT) – Davis is an emergency room physician. She is a member of the Baptist Medical-Dental Fellowship, and the Christian Medical-Dental Association. She has been a member of the State Medical Education Board since 1989 and previously served as chairman. Davis earned a bachelor’s degree from Mercer University and a medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. She and her husband, Jimmy, have three children and two grandchildren.
