ATLANTA, GA - Governor Sonny Perdue announced today the following executive appointments:
Professional Standards Commission
Maria Jesus Miller, 35, Tucker, GA, Elementary School Teacher Representative (REAPPOINTMENT)—Miller is currently a third grade and kindergarten English-as-a-Second-or-Other-Language teacher at Hopkins Elementary in the Gwinnett County Public School system. She is a member of the Professional Association of Georgia Educators. Miller has been a presenter for the Georgia Foreign Language Teacher Training Seminar and a member of the writing team for the Gwinnett Foreign Language Guide. She received her undergraduate degree from Georgia State University, a master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Brenau University and an Education Specialist degree from Sarasota University. She and her husband, Ashley, have two children.
Mary Elizabeth Outlaw, 49, Armuchee, GA, Education Faculty Representative—Outlaw is Director of Field Experiences and Student Teaching at Berry College. She was a delegate to the Kappa Delta Pi 44th International Convocation and has been published in many refereed and non-refereed journals, books, instructional materials, and book reviews. Outlaw received the Faculty Voice of Berry award for 2003-2004, the Alumna Service award from Palm Beach Atlantic University, and the Outstanding Writing Across the Curriculum Course award from Berry College. She received her undergraduate degree from Palm Beach Atlantic University, her master’s in Outdoor Teacher Education from Northern Illinois University, and a doctorate degree in Elementary Education from the University of Georgia.
Sandra Lee Thompson, 56, Marietta, GA, High School Teacher Representative—Thompson is presently a faculty member and the Apprenticeship/Grants Coordinator for the Marietta City High School System. She is also presently an adjunct faculty member of the Bagwell College of Education at Kennesaw State University. She is the former Executive Director of the Georgia Association for Career and Technical Education. Thompson is a member of the National Business Education Association, the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, and the Georgia Association of Educators, and is an alumna of Leadership Cobb and the Atlanta Regional Leadership Institute. She received the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers award and America’s Registry of Outstanding Professionals award. Thompson received her undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University, a master’s degree in Business Education, two Education Specialist degrees in Business Education and Technical Education, and a Doctoral Studies degree in School Administration from Georgia State University.

Jack Miller, 63, Kennesaw, GA, Chairman (REAPPOINTMENT)—Miller is President of Miller Signature Homes. He previously served as Vice President of Marketing for Superior Fireplace Company, U.S. Brass and Silkirk Metalbestos. Miller is a member of the Powder Springs Downtown Development Authority, the Cobb Home Builders, and the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association. He is also a member of the Council for Quality Growth. Miller received his undergraduate degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Industrial Engineering. He and his wife, Mary, have three children.
State Board of Registration for Foresters
James Frederick "Fred" Allen, 56, Gray, GA, Forester Representative—Allen is currently employed by the Southern Research Station of the USDA Forest Service. He previously served in many different capacities for the Georgia Forestry Commission, including serving as Director for six years . Allen is a member of the Georgia Forestry Association and Director of the Southern Alliance for the Utilization of Forest Resources. He is a registered forester in Georgia. Allen received his undergraduate degree from the School of Forest Resources at the University of Georgia. He and his wife, Teresa, have two children and one grandchild.
John Britt, 40, Fortson, GA, Forester Representative—Britt has held technical and managerial positions with Mead and MeadWestvaco Corporations for fifteen years. He is a registered forester in Georgia. Britt is a graduate of Leadership Harris County and the Georgia Academy for Economic Development. He serves on the Harris County Planning Commission and the Board of Directors of River Alive. Britt also serves on Georgia’s Clean Water Campaign and the Harris County Water Works Benevolence Committee. He received his undergraduate degree from Clemson University in Forest Management and a master’s degree from Auburn University. Britt and his wife, Kerry, have two children.
Walter Dale Greene, 45, Athens, GA, Forester Representative – Greene is a Professor in the Daniel B. Warnell School of Forest Resources at the University of Georgia. He was previously involved with a harvesting research project for Westvaco Corporation. Greene is a registered forester in Georgia. He is a member of the Harvesting Task Force of the American Pulpwood Association, is a board member of the Georgia Forestry Association, and has served as National Chairman for the Council on Forest Engineering. Greene received his undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University, a master's from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University, and a Ph.D. from Auburn University. He and his wife, Jeanna, have one son.
John W. Mixon, 66, The Rock, GA, Forester Representative – Mixon is the President of John W. Mixon and Associates, P.C., and is currently a Forestry Consultant. He worked with the Georgia Forestry Commission for over 34 years, serving as a Director for 12 years. Mixon serves on the Board for the Georgia Forestry Association and Central Georgia Technical College. He is a member of the Forest Landowners Association and the Georgia Farm Bureau. He has been honored with “Fellow” classification by the Society of American Foresters, and he has received the UGA Forestry Distinguished Alumnus Award. He and his wife, Sue, have three children and eight grandchildren.
Georgia Composite Board of Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors, and Marriage and Family Therapists
George William "Bill" Quarterman, 54, Toccoa, Licensed Professional Counselor Representative—Quarterman is a professor and Chairman of the Psychology and Counseling Department at Toccoa Falls College. He is also a Licensed Professional Counselor with Quarterman and Associates. He is a member of the Licensed Professional Counselor Association, the American Association of Christian Counselors, and Chairman of the Action Community Team for a Drug-free Stephens County. Quarterman has worked on leadership and team building workshops with Coca-Cola, Nabisco, Delta Airlines, and Ford Motor Company , to name a few. He earned his undergraduate degree from Toccoa Falls College, a master’s in Religious Education and Counseling Psychology from Trinity International University, and a doctorate degree in Counseling and Student Personnel Services from the University of Georgia. Quarterman and his wife, Cynthia, have two children.
