Statement of Governor Sonny Perdue Regarding Hurricane Charley

Saturday, August 14, 2004  Contact: Office of Communications 404-651-7774

ATLANTA - Governor Sonny Perdue issued the following statement today regarding Hurricane Charley:

"Hurricane Charley struck the coast of Florida and left behind a path of destruction in which thousands of our neighbors are homeless and traumatized. This is a terrible tragedy and our hearts go out to Floridians who have lost so much.

"I have spoken with Governor Bush and our state will be providing all resources at our disposal to ensure that victims receive emergency aid. Georgia is part of a compact with his state to lend support when a natural disaster occurs.

"In times of great tragedy, I know that Georgians want to help our neighbors in distress. The most efficient way of providing assistance is to make a financial contribution to a disaster relief fund of your choice.

"Unless you have family members displaced by the storm, please do not travel to Florida. Roads should be kept clear for transport of much needed supplies and emergency responders en route to the scene."
