ATLANTA , GA - Governor Sonny Perdue announced today the approval of a plan to reopen the Augusta Youth Development Campus as a state operated facility. The facility was temporarily closed earlier this year to review the long-term operating options available to the state. The decision to reopen the Augusta YDC as a state-run facility is the result of a thorough assessment and the needs of these young people.

"Commissioner Murray made a very strong case for state operation of this facility and is confident that DJJ can do better with these troubled young people. He understands that he will be held accountable and is willing to accept that responsibility," said Governor Sonny Perdue.

Department of Juvenile Justice Commissioner Albert Murray explained, "Since this population is among the most challenging youth in our system, the state clearly has the responsibility for assisting them. State operation will give this facility the flexibility needed to provide the individual attention these youth deserve."

The Augusta facility is tentatively scheduled to re-open in the fall, with 100-113 bed capacity. The facility will focus on the treatment of juvenile offenders with mental challenges. This includes assessments, acute care and crisis intervention, chronic illness/treatment, and transitional services.
