ATLANTA, GA - Governor Sonny Perdue announced today that Mohawk Industries, one of Georgia's major employers, will significantly expand its manufacturing and distribution campus in Calhoun by constructing two new large-scale facilities.  This project will retain 485 jobs and create an opportunity for approximately 125 new jobs in the Gordon County area.

The Mohawk project will require a total combined investment of $33 million for the construction of the two new sites, which will include 1.3 million square feet of new floor space.  Gordon County and Georgia overcame competition from sites in South Carolina and Maryland for the new assembly/distribution centers.

" Georgia is a great place to do business, and we are excited that Mohawk has decided to invest in their operations here at home," said Governor Sonny Perdue.  "Our relationship with Mohawk illustrates that we are not only committed to recruiting new industries to Georgia but also to growing existing companies within the state."

"The State of Georgia, Gordon County and Calhoun have been great partners with us in growing our company," said Jeffrey Lorberbaum, Mohawk's Chairman and CEO.  "This project keeps us in Georgia, where we started and where we foresee a great future."

"We are pleased and excited to have Mohawk Industries continue to grow in our community," said Larry Roye, chairman of the Development Authority of Gordon County.  "Mohawk has always been an outstanding corporate citizen and a major employer in Calhoun and Gordon County."

"We appreciate the investment and the large number of jobs that will be retained and created in the community.  The team effort put together by our local representatives, the State of Georgia and Mohawk Industries has made this project possible.  The future is bright because of the partnership we have with Mohawk," stated Jimmy Phillips, president of the Gordon County Chamber of Commerce.

The Georgia Department of Industry, Trade and Tourism (GDITT) has recommended that The Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) work with the Development Authority of Gordon County and the OneGeorgia Authority to assist the community in obtaining a grant to support site development for the company.

Mohawk Industries, Inc. is headquartered in Sugar Valley, Georgia and employs more than 18,000 Georgians.  The company is a leading supplier of flooring for both residential and commercial applications and a producer of woven and tufted broadloom carpet, rugs and ceramic tile. Mohawk has been a mainstay in the northwest Georgia textile industry for 120 years.
