Atlanta - Governor Sonny Perdue issued the following statement today regarding the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to deny a stay of judgment in Cox v. Larios. This decision should effectively end all legal recourse, however tenuous, available to Secretary of State Cathy Cox and Attorney General Thurbert Baker to allow the use of unconstitutional maps in November's elections.

"The U.S. Supreme Court's decision is great news for Georgia. It is great news for the constitutional principle of one person, one vote. It is great news for the many communities that have been torn apart by the current district maps. The people of our state deserve legislative districts that are fair and square.

"It is the responsibility of Georgia's elected leaders to draw these maps. We should not rely on the Court to do the people's business. I encourage the House and Senate to quickly pass maps that move Georgia forward."
