Governor Perdue Secures Workforce Retraining Grant for Brown & Williamson Employees

Atlanta - Workers dislocated from the Brown & Williamson facility in Macon , Georgia will receive transition assistance as the result of a federal grant secured by Governor Sonny Perdue. A $4.2 million workforce retraining grant is being made available by the U.S. Department of Labor. The monies will be dispersed through the Georgia Department of Labor.

"I want to thank Secretary Chao for making these funds available to Georgia . This program will help the hard-working men and women of Brown and Williamson as they transition to new jobs," said Governor Sonny Perdue. "I also appreciate Senators Chambliss and Miller for their assistance facilitating this grant."

The funding totals $4,218,513, with $585,905 to be released initially. The grant will also assist businesses which will be impacted indirectly by the closing of the Macon plant. Assistance covered under this grant includes, among other things, counseling, skills training and development and job placement.
