Governor Perdue Announces State Board Appointments

Atlanta - Governor Sonny Perdue announced appointments today to the State Board of Education and the Board of Corrections. The final appointment was made to the State Board of Education - Dean Alford of Conyers, GA to represent the Thirteenth Congressional District. One reappointment was made to the Board of Corrections - Charles Hudson of LaGrange, GA to serve as a member at-large.

"The key to serving the people of Georgia is being a good steward of their trust," said Governor Sonny Perdue. "I am confident these two appointees will serve the state with distinction and with a deep regard for their respective positions."

The State Board of Education is comprised of 13 members, each member from one of the state's congressional districts. The Board of Corrections is comprised of 18 members, 13 members representing each congressional district and five at-large members.

Brief biographies are provided below:

Board of Education

Dean Alford, 49, Conyers, GA, 13th Congressional District - Alford is President and Chief Executive Officer of Allied Utility Network, a consulting firm to the electric and natural gas utility industry. He serves on the Advisory Board of Georgia Perimeter College's Rockdale Campus, the Board of Regents for Luther Rice Seminary, the Woodward Academy Middle School Standing Committee. He was responsible for the partnership between Georgia Tech and The Rockdale County School System in the creation of the Rockdale Math, Science and Technology Magnet School. Alford is also very involved in community activities including Rotary Club, Boy Scouts of America, First Baptist Church of Conyers, Conyers/Rockdale Chamber of Commerce, and the Conyers/Rockdale Boys and Girls Club. From 1983 to 1993, Alford was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives. He has received several awards including the City of Conyers Community Spirit Award in 2001, the Conyers-Rockdale Chamber of Commerce 2001 Vision Award, and the 2002 Dean Griffin Award for Community Service. Hudson earned his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech and serves on several boards at the Institute. Alford and his wife, Terre, have a son and a daughter.

Board of Corrections

Charles Hudson, 76, LaGrange, GA, Member At-large - Hudson is the President of Hammond, Hudson & Holder, Inc., a partner in PCH Properties, and a Vice President and Director of LaGrange Industries, Inc. and Hudson Maddox Enterprises. He has been a member of the Board of Corrections since 1983. Hudson is a Trustee and Chairman of the Board at LaGrange College and served as Acting President from 1979-1980. He attended Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama and holds honorary degrees from LaGrange College and Mercer University. Hudson has been named to Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, and Who's Who in the World. He serves as a Trustee and Vice President of the Callaway Foundation and Director of Georgians for Clean Water, Inc. Hudson has been awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the Georgia Hospital Association, the Distinguished Alumni Award from Woodward Academy, the Respect of Law Award from the Optimist Club, and the Public Service Award from the Georgia chapter of the American Institute of Architecture. Hudson, and his wife, Ida, have four children and are active members of First Baptist Church in LaGrange, Georgia.
