Atlanta - Governor Sonny Perdue issued the following statement today regarding the death of former Atlanta Mayor Maynard Holbrook Jackson, Jr:
"Early this morning, I was informed of the sudden death of Maynard Jackson. I extend my most heartfelt sympathy to his family, friends and business associates. My prayers are with them during their time of bereavement.
The City of Atlanta and our state have both lost a great and visionary leader.
Mayor Maynard Jackson led Georgia's capitol city with a strong sense of community and vision. Under his leadership, the city of Atlanta was firmly established as the crown jewel of the vibrant South. Georgians benefit today from the economic engine that Atlanta became during his three terms of service.
His commitment to public service, strong business acumen, and love of family have firmly established his place in history. Atlanta's growth and prominence among the nation's most vital cities will also live on as a large part of Maynard Jackson's tremendous legacy."
