Atlanta - Governor Sonny Perdue today issued the following statement regarding the House Rules Committee's recommendation on the Georgia State flag referendum:

"I am aware of the compromise proposal reached by members of the House Rules Committee regarding the state flag. From the beginning, I have felt that the people of Georgia should be heard on this issue. In the past, people have felt excluded from the process. This proposal will allow the people of Georgia to express their views on our state flag and moves us a step closer to finding a resolution to this important issue.

I applaud the bipartisan leadership demonstrated by House Majority Leader Jimmy Skipper, House Minority Leader Lynn Westmoreland, Majority Caucus Chairman Calvin Smyre and my floor leader Representative Glenn Richardson for their efforts to work together on behalf of all Georgians.

I remain committed to working with the legislature as this proposal works its way through the legislative process and remain hopeful that discussions regarding our state's flag remain open and accessible to all Georgians. "
