ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue announced today that Georgia had been awarded more than $37 million in federal grants from the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the state’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and Community HOME Investment Program (CHIP).

“The Community Development Block Grant program offers a great resource to rural communities that are striving to help low and moderate-income citizens.  Numerous communities around the state will use this important funding source to support various quality of life, economic and job creation programs,” said Governor Sonny Perdue.

More than $32.2 million allocated for CDBG awards will be used to support projects in 66 Georgia communities.  Projects include water and sewer improvements, senior citizen facilities, programs for at-risk children, programs for mentally and physically challenged residents and replacement or rehabilitation of sub-standard and dilapidated housing.

The CDBG program is administered by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA), which uses funds allocated through HUD to support local initiatives to improve living conditions and economic opportunities throughout the state.

Governor Perdue also announced that Georgia was awarded more than $5.1 million in Community HOME Investment Program funds.  CHIP funds will assist 19 Georgia communities increase the supply of safe and affordable housing for low and moderate-income persons.

“Every Georgian deserves access to safe, clean and affordable housing.   CHIP funds will assist local communities seeking to increase available housing units and improve the standard of living for their citizens,” said Governor Perdue.
