Governor Perdue Presents Third Star to General David Poythress

BUFORD, Ga. – Governor Sonny Perdue today presented Georgia’s Adjutant General, Major General David B. Poythress, with his third star of Lieutenant General during the 58th Annual Conference of the National Guard Association of Georgia being held at Emerald Point Conference Center at Lake Lanier Island.

“General Poythress has been a loyal, faithful servant to the state, serving as a strong leader and providing outstanding guidance to the Georgia National Guard for seven years,” said Governor Sonny Perdue. “In this time we have taken on some historic challenges, and our men and women have performed admirably. Today it is a great honor to recognize General Poythress with his third star. He becomes the only commander of the Georgia National Guard to be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General.”

Lt. Gen. Poythress is the 36th Adjutant General of Georgia and commands more than 12,000 men and women of the Georgia Army and Air National Guard and the Georgia State Defense Force.

Lt. Gen. Poythress has had a long and distinguished career that includes military service, public service and private law practice. He has served as the deputy state revenue commissioner, secretary of state and commissioner of labor. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Lt. Gen. Poythress retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1998.

The National Guard Association of Georgia is a non-profit service organization composed of senior enlisted and commissioned officers of the Georgia Air and Army National Guard organized to promote the mission and the National Guard of the state of Georgia.
