Governor Perdue Visits Expanded Langboard OSB Mill

Mill an Example of Innovation, Combining Growth and Environmental Protection

QUITMAN, Ga. – Today Governor Sonny Perdue visited Langboard OSB, a leader in the engineered wood industry, to inaugurate the November 2005 completion of the company’s recent expansion in south Georgia. Langboard OSB, which was Georgia’s first Oriented Strand Board (OSB) mill, doubled its productive capacity to 440 million square feet of OSB per year, adding 15 new jobs and providing a greater market for regional timberland owners, forestry professionals and local harvesting and transportation crews that depend on those markets for jobs.

“I want to congratulate Langdale Industries on its new expansion, and thank them for what they mean to this community and to the state of Georgia,” said Governor Sonny Perdue. “Langboard’s innovation has created 15 new jobs in this community, and helped generate jobs for loggers, drivers and forestry professionals. Langboard is doing its part to support growth in Georgia’s timber market.”

In November 2005 Langboard Inc. embarked on a green energy initiative and is now producing renewable energy and reducing air emissions by utilizing wood waste from the production of OSB. The wood waste is used for fuel in furnaces that produce heat for Langboard’s plant operations and steam to power a 10 megawatt turbine and generator. The renewable energy produced is enough to power roughly 4,000 homes. In addition, through innovative engineering, air emissions from the plant are captured and directed back to furnaces for combustion, removing volatile compounds from the air.

OSB is a major building product for Georgia’s construction and housing industry. The original Langboard OSB mill was constructed in 1988. There are now four OSB mills in Georgia.
