Georgia's Purchasing Department Wins Top Honor

ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue announced today that the State Purchasing Division of the Department of Administrative Services (DOAS) won the National Purchasing Institute’s “Achievement of Excellence in Procurement” award for the tenth year in a row. Georgia is the only state in the country to receive the award in ten consecutive years.

“We are changing the way the state does business to make it faster, friendlier and easier,” said Governor Sonny Perdue. “This award is another example that we are on the right track striving toward and achieving excellence.”

The award recognizes State Purchasing for its innovation, professionalism, productivity, e-procurement advancements and organizational excellence. The National Purchasing Institute, which designed the annual award in 1995, is comprised of professional purchasing personnel from across the country dedicated to the development of efficient purchasing methods and practices in the areas of governmental, educational and institutional procurements.

This honor is especially noteworthy because it recognizes State Purchasing’s high level of achievement, even while undergoing a significant transformation. Over the last two years, State Purchasing has won the award while implementing major enterprise-wide procurement system revisions, hiring new staff with improved skills, and embracing new principles of Strategic Sourcing.

“As we strive toward the Governor’s goal of a more customer-friendly state government, it is an honor for State Purchasing to receive this award for the tenth consecutive year,” said DOAS Commissioner Brad Douglas. “At the same time we are continuing to look at ways to improve our process even more so we can win the award again next year.”
