Flags on State Buildings Lowered to Half Staff in Honor of Chief Justice Rehnquist

ATLANTA – Today Governor Sonny Perdue signed an Executive Order directing the flags on all state buildings to be lowered to half staff in honor of Chief Justice of the United States William Rehnquist, as prescribed by Section 7(m) of Chapter 1 of Title 4 of the United States Code. The flags will remain a half staff for a period of time to run concurrent with the declaration of President Bush.

Rehnquist, 80, was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1971 by President Richard Nixon. He was appointed the chief justice in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan. He passed away on Saturday, September 3.

Text of the Executive Order is provided below:

FLAGS ON STATE BUILDINGS ORDERED LOWERED TO HALF STAFF

WHEREAS: The Honorable William H. Rehnquist served this Nation with distinction as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court, and for the past nineteen years as Chief Justice of the United States; and

WHEREAS: The President of the United States of America has authorized and requested that the flag of the United States of America be flown at half staff in honor of Chief Justice Rehnquist;

NOW, THEREFORE, PURSUANT TO THE AUTHORITY VESTED IN ME AS GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA, IT IS HEREBY

ORDERED: That the flag of the United States and the flag of this State be lowered to half staff on all buildings and grounds for a time to run concurrent with the declaration of the President of the United States.
