Governor Perdue Announces Executive Appointments to Jasper Port Study Committee

ATLANTA – The Jasper Port Study Committee was created in the 2005 legislative session by Senate Resolution 23. The committee will study several factors, including environmental concerns and federal regulations, to examine the feasibility of creating a joint port in Jasper County, South Carolina.

The committee is composed of three members of the Senate appointed by the Senate Committee on Assignments, three members of the House of Representatives appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and three citizens appointed by the Governor.

Stephen S. “Steve” Green, 57, Savannah, GA, CITIZEN MEMBER – Green is the president and chief executive officer of Stephen Green Properties, a commercial real estate investment and development corporation. He is the founding organizer of the First Chatham Bank and the First Bank of Brunswick. Green previously served as chief of staff for Congressman Lindsay Thomas and was president and vice president of Green Distributors, a Frito-Lay distributor for southeast Georgia. He is the immediate past chairman of the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce, the president of the Educational Properties Foundation Board, and a member of the Georgia Ports Authority. Green has served as the sponsorship chair of the American Heart Association Board of Directors and is a member of the Armstrong Atlantic State University Foundation Board of Trustees. Green attended Armstrong Atlantic State University and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia.

M. J. “Jerry” Hogan, Sr., 62, Savannah, GA, CITIZEN MEMBER - Hogan is the owner and president of Hogan’s Marina, a dry rack, wet storage, and launching marina facility on Turner's Creek in Savannah. He is also the president of the Georgia Marina Business Association, local past president and National Executive Committee member of the Propeller Club, and a member of the Savannah Maritime Association. Hogan is a member of the Saint Patrick's Day Parade Committee, and served as parade Grand Marshall in 1994. He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Hogan and his wife, Arie, have three children.

Leavon Shuman, 60, Savannah, GA, CITIZEN MEMBER - Shuman is the chairman of the committee on political education for the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) Local 1414. He has served in various capacities for the ILA, including chairman of the C.O.P.E. committee. He is a member of the NAACP and the A. Phillip Randolph Institution. Shuman attended Savannah Vocational-Technical Institute. He and his wife, Sherrell, have two children.
