Statement of Governor Perdue Regarding the Passing of State Senator Paul C. Broun

ATLANTA, GA - Governor Sonny Perdue issued the following statement regarding the passing of State Senator Paul C. Broun:

"Mary and I extend our deepest condolences to the family of Senator Paul Broun. He was widely known as a dedicated civic leader and a true public servant. When I was a new state senator, I learned a great deal from his wisdom and leadership in the State Senate. He was an inspiration to all those who had the honor of working with him.”

Senator Broun was born in Shellman, Georgia in 1916. After graduation from Athens High School, he went on to receive his bachelor’s of science degree in agricultural engineering from the University of Georgia. Senator Broun served in the Army Infantry in World War II and held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was a life member of the VFW.

Senator Broun served in the Georgia Senate from 1963 until 2000 representing Clarke and Oconee Counties and most of Barrow County. During this time, his services included Chairman of the Appropriations, Economic Development, Tourism & Cultural Affairs, Interstate Cooperation and Higher Education committees.

Senator Broun was the President of Athens Tire and Supply Company, and was a past president of the Chamber of Commerce, the Exchange Club and the City Club in Athens. He was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Senator Broun was a widower and the father of three grown sons, Paul Jr., Conway and Michael.
