Tuesday, January 4, 2005  Contact: Office of Communications 404-651-7774

ATLANTA, GA – Governor Sonny Perdue released the following statement.

“With the dawn of the new year arriving, Mary and I ask that all Georgians rededicate themselves to serving our neighbors and fellow man. This call to service becomes ever more critical in tragic times.

“The earthquake and tsunamis that struck South Asia on December 26 caused a mass catastrophe that will be felt worldwide for years to come. While we certainly cannot offer any help in understanding this tragedy, we hope that over time all will come to remember only the joy and happiness brought into our world by the thousands of children, fathers, mothers and friends who lost their lives.

“Please join me in praying that out of this tragedy, the goodwill of Georgians and the

American people will shine brighter than ever as we send help and relief to all of those so greatly in need. The Georgia Flag will be flown at half-staff until sunset Friday, January 7, 2005.

“Below is a link to the President of the United State’s website that details how all of us can help the victims of this disaster. Please find out how you can follow his lead to join the rescue efforts.”
