ATLANTA -- Governor Sonny Perdue said tonight that he would make an announcement next week calling for a special session of the legislature to pass a balanced 2007 amended budget that meets the needs of Georgia’s citizens.  Yesterday, Perdue vetoed a budget proposal which would have let up on internet predators, led to furloughs for prosecutors, stopped toxic waste cleanup, and halted health screening for newborns.  He said that neglecting critical needs such as these "will not happen on my watch."

The Governor will consult with Legislative leaders to determine the best time for a special session but warned that "we must move quickly to ensure that critical programs such as PeachCare can continue to serve and protect Georgians."  The minimum practical duration of a special session is five working days due to House and Senate procedural requirements.
