Governor Perdue Unveils Official Portrait

ATLANTA– Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue unveiled today his official portrait to hang in the halls of the Georgia State Capitol. Previous paintings have showcased governors and important moments in their terms; this is the first portrait to include both a Governor and First Lady.

“There is a uniqueness to this portrait - it has two people in it.  I asked that Mary be by my side for two reasons.  One, I knew it would make the thing prettier.  Two, I wanted it to be a commentary saying that what we accomplished, we accomplished as a team,” said Governor Perdue. “I couldn’t have done this without Mary. She has been my greatest earthly source of inspiration and she has served as a daily reminder of our purpose in public office.”

  The decision of which artist to use began about two years ago. After Governor Perdue met with Rossin, it was decided that he would paint the portrait. During the summer of 2010, Rossin photographed the Governor and First Lady for the portrait.

Artist Rossin, whose full name is Rossen Raytchev Raykov, is known for his photograph-like oil paintings of famous individuals. His works include portraits of Abraham Lincoln, Jackie Kennedy and a painting displayed in the National Portrait Gallery of Andrew Young. The Bulgarian-born artist also is known for a painting depicting 18 U.S. presidents from the 20th century seated together at the White House.
