Elections for North Georgia Vacant Seats Moved Back

ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue announced today the special elections to fill vacant Congressional, State Senate and State House seats in North Georgia will be held May 11 instead of April 27.  

Secretary of State Brian Kemp contacted Governor Perdue today and expressed concern that there would not be enough time to get ballots returned from military members stationed overseas.   Moving the election back two weeks would allow more time for the ballots to be printed, mailed out and returned. The qualifying period for candidates wishing to run in any of the three special elections will remain March 29 through March 31.

Voters in the 9^th Congressional District must select a replacement for Nathan Deal in the U.S. House. Voters in the 49^th State Senate District will fill the legislative seat formerly held by Sen. Lee Hawkins and citizens in the 12^th State House District will replace Rep. Tom Graves.

All three elections will be held on May 11 and runoff elections, if needed, will be June 8.

Below is the writ of election for the 9^th Congressional District:

A vacancy now exists in the United States House of Representatives due to the resignation of the official elected to represent Georgia’s Ninth District. 

 

Therefore, pursuant to Section 21-2-543 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, a Writ of Election is hereby issued to the Secretary of State for a special election to be held on Tuesday, May 11, 2010, to fill the vacancy in Georgia’s Ninth District of the United States House of Representatives. 

           

Any inconsistent previous order is hereby rescinded.

Below is the writ of election for House District 12:

House District 12 has become vacant due to the resignation of Representative Tom Graves.

 

Therefore, pursuant to Article V, Section II, Paragraph VIII of the Constitution of the State of Georgia and Section 21-2-544 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, a Writ of Election is hereby issued to the Secretary of State for a special election to be held on May 11, 2010, to fill the temporary vacancy in District 12 of the Georgia House of Representatives.

 

Any inconsistent previous order is hereby rescinded.

Below is the writ of election for Senate District 49:

Senate District 49 has become vacant due to the resignation of Senator Lee Hawkins.

 

Therefore, pursuant to Article V, Section II, Paragraph VIII of the Constitution of the State of Georgia and Section 21-2-544 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, a Writ of Election is hereby issued to the Secretary of State for a special election to be held on May 11, 2010, to fill the temporary vacancy in District 49 of the Georgia State Senate.

 

Any inconsistent previous order is hereby rescinded.
