Friday, August 14, 2009  Contact: Office of Communications 404-651-7774, DCA: Assistant Commissioner Brian Williams (404) 679-1587

ATLANTA  Governor Sonny Perdue is awarding 23 Georgia communities a total of $10.3 million in stimulus funds from the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) under the State Community Development Block Grant Recovery Act program (CDBG – R). The Georgia Department of Community Affairs will release the awards and initiate the projects.

“These funds will provide an economic boost to communities in their efforts to fund projects that will create jobs and improve infrastructure,” said Governor Perdue.

The CDBG - R uses funds allocated through HUD to support local initiatives that focus on improving living conditions and economic opportunities throughout the state.

“We are pleased that these funds will be used to fund critical projects that will assist in moving local economies forward,” said DCA Commissioner Mike Beatty. “This announcement demonstrates how federal and state partners are working together to support our local communities.”

CDBG – R funds will be used to support projects in 23 Georgia communities. Projects include direct loans for equipment in order to save jobs, water and sewer improvements, street and drainage improvements, and building construction/renovation. All projects are serving Georgia citizens through permanent or temporary job creation. A complete list of projects and planned award amounts is included below.

An informational workshop for CDBG – R recipient communities is scheduled for September 24-25 at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain. Recipient communities may direct workshop-related questions to Lisa Smith at (404) 679-5276 or lisa.smith@dca.ga.gov .
