Governor Perdue Appoints Member to Baldwin County School Board

ATLANTA  Governor Sonny Perdue announced today the appointment of Rebecca Brock to the Baldwin County School Board. Brock is a veteran educator in Baldwin County, beginning her career teaching middle school students and later moving to the administrative field where she served as an assistant principal and principal.

“Improving education requires a broad understanding of the many challenges facing a school system,” said Governor Perdue. “Rebecca Brock brings both classroom and administrative experience with her to the board.”

On June 20, 2008, a vacancy was created on the Baldwin County Board of Education due to the resignation of Judy P. Ivey.  The remaining members of the Baldwin County Board of Education have been unable to agree on a mutually acceptable member to fill the vacant seat on the board. According to Georgia Code Section 45-5-3.1(b), the ability to appoint falls to the Governor “when any local or general law provides for the appointment, other than appointment by the Governor, of a person to fill a vacancy in an elective public office and such vacancy is not filled within 45 days after the vacancy occurs, the Governor shall appoint a person to fill such vacancy. A person appointed by the Governor to fill a vacancy pursuant to this subsection shall serve until such time as that person would serve had the person been appointed as provided in that local or general law.”

The executive order is provided below:

Whereas:               On June 20, 2008, a vacancy was created on the Baldwin County Board of Education due to the resignation of Judy P. Ivey; and

 

Whereas:               The remaining members of the Baldwin County Board of Education have been unable to agree on a mutually acceptable member to fill the vacant seat; and

 

Whereas:               The requisite 45 day period since the creation of the vacancy having passed without appointment by the appointing authority, the responsibility for appointment falls to the Governor.

 

Now, Therefore, Pursuant to the Authority Vested in Me as Governor of the State of Georgia, It Is Hereby

 

Ordered:                That Rebecca Brock be and is hereby appointed as a member of the Baldwin County Board of Education, with duties and powers as provided by applicable law to serve out the unexpired term of the office.

 

                                    It is Further

 

Ordered:                That the Secretary of State is hereby authorized and directed to issue a commission to Ms. Rebecca Brock as a member of the Baldwin County Board of Education.
