Six Week Event Encouraged Georgians To Develop Healthy Lifestyles

Atlanta - Governor Sonny Perdue's quest to lose 20 pounds concluded today when he weighed out at 211.5 pounds - 17 pounds lighter than when the Governor's Capitol Challenge: Fitness On Our Minds (Challenge) was launched on February 6, 2003. The idea for the Challenge was launched when Governor Perdue announced plans to shed 20 pounds and thought it might be fun for other Georgians interested in healthy lifestyles to join him.

Nearly 100 Challenge participants gathered today in the State Capitol Rotunda to check Governor Perdue's progress. "I started the Challenge as a way to encourage Georgians to discuss living a healthier lifestyle. Like many busy people, I had not always taken the time to carefully monitor my diet and include exercise. Although today marks the official end of the Challenge, it marks the continuation of my personal effort to stay healthy, improve my diet and exercise regularly," said Governor Perdue.

"I am appreciative of the support received from the Metropolitan Atlanta YMCA, our official Challenge partner and several other organizations including Georgia State University, American Heart Association, American Dietetic Association, Weight Watchers and other healthy lifestyle-focused organizations throughout the state. I have been especially touched by the encouragement I have received from many Georgians as I traveled around the state," added Governor Perdue. Hundreds of mindful Georgians sent Governor Perdue notes of encouragement, suggestions, snack ideas and workout recommendations.

More than 2,500 Georgians signed up for the Challenge. Over the six week period, Challenge participants were invited to Lunch & Learn workshops on topics such as selecting the best gear for your sport, weight training, stress management and healthy grocery shopping techniques.
