Statement of Governor Sonny Perdue Regarding Final Passage of Truth in Class Size Legislation

ATLANTA – Governor Sonny Perdue issued the following statement today regarding the final passage of his legislation to reduce the maximum class size requirements for elementary and middle schools (HB1358). The legislation received unanimous support in the State Senate and near unanimous support in the State House.

“I’d like to thank Representative Brooks Coleman, Senator Dan Moody and the rest of the General Assembly for passing this important piece of legislation,” said Governor Sonny Perdue. “Smaller class sizes give teachers more time for one-on-one interaction with their students and help them maintain order and discipline in the classroom. The Truth in Class Size legislation will result in increased student performance and an overall improvement of Georgia’s educational system.”

HB1358 was introduced in the House by Representative Brooks Coleman and carried in the Senate by Senator Dan Moody. It passed the House with a 160-4 vote on March 2, 2006, and passed the Senate today with a 50-0 vote.
