ATLANTA , GA - Governor Sonny Perdue issued today the following Independence Day message:

"Mary and I wish every Georgia family a safe and enjoyable Independence Day weekend. The Fourth of July is a time to gather with family and friends to enjoy parades, picnics, and other patriotic celebrations.

"As we gather to celebrate our blessings in this land of liberty, we should be mindful of the price of freedom. Let's give thanks for the defenders of our freedom - America 's Armed Forces and our veterans. Georgia has always been a patriotic state, willing to do more than our share for the national defense. Even now, thousands of Georgia-based troops are fighting the War on Terrorism in Iraq , Afghanistan , and around the world. I hope that every Georgian will make a special point this Fourth of July of saying 'thank you' to a veteran or service member for making this Independence Day possible.

" America has been a beacon of liberty for 228 years. Let's rededicate ourselves to our nation's highest ideals and do all we can to keep our state and nation strong and free."
