Atlanta - Governor Sonny Perdue issued the following statement regarding strong bipartisan passage of his education legislation, HB1190, by the General Assembly:

"Teachers, parents, and students will be able to do their jobs better because of this legislation. Our schools will have flexibility to meet the needs of their students in this era of accountability and the tools to improve the classroom learning environment through stronger discipline measures. The bill also contains an accountability system that does not point fingers, but gives our schools incentives for continuous improvement.

"In addition to flexibility and accountability, my school discipline proposals were included in this legislation, including student attendance committees, more discipline tools for schools and teachers, and use of the driver's license as a means to improve discipline and increase student attendance. This is an important victory for education in our state."
